Address: Hematology & Oncology ResearchCenter, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Tabriz, Iran.

As the greatest research and educational center of hematology-oncology in northwestern Iran, our prophetic, religious, and national goals are:

1.Developing research opportunities in educational, hygienic, and therapeutic fields.

2.Sounding and programming policies on hematology and oncology topics.

3.Producing new information for promoting healthcare.

4.Promoting full partnership in order to raise Iran’s scientific status in international associations and organizations.

5.Conducting collaborative studies to reduce the incidence of morbidity and mortality in order to increase the span and quality of life.

6.Providing attention to patients in poor conditions.

7.Coordinating collaborative research between national and international scientific and research associations to improve the conditions of deprived patients.

Strategic topics:

1.Creating research opportunities and capacities of center.

2.Promoting cooperation between different departments, especially the basic science department.

Enormous goals:

1.Organizing the patient registry system.

2.Equipping and using center laboratories in order to achieve research goals along with accredited responsibilities.

3. Increasing the number of facilities.

4.Improving and increasing the skills and participation of center constituents.

5.Expanding joint responsibilities first with the basic science department before any clinical and molecular biology trials.

6.Summoning other departments for collaboration in research center activities and policies.

Research Laboratory

Dr Aliakbar Movassaghpour Akbari, Assistant Professor.

Applications of the PCR:

1-     Diagnosis of infectious diseases ( CMV, HCV, HBV, HIV, TB, HPV and Mycoplasma) .

2-     Use of PCR in Molecular oncology.

3-     Diagnosis of genetic disorders (Cystic, Fibrosis, Sickle cell anemia, Thalassemia, Hemophilia).

4-     Diagnosis of mutation.

5-     Molecular tissue typing.

6-     Cloning of specific sequences.

Flow Cytometry division

The Flow Cytometry unit of the Hematology & Oncology Research centre Laboratory uses complex and highly versatile flow cytometers for both routine analysis and research.
Flow cytometers are laser-based instrument

s capable of measuring fluorescent and non fluorescent light properties of individual particles as they pass through the instrument's laser beam. These properties can be used to characterize particles and physically separate particles of interest from other particles in solution.

Cytogenetics division:

The Cytogenetics unit at the Hematology & Oncology Research centre was established in order to provide a

general cytogenetics service to the leukemia population.
A wide variety of tests are offered on metaphase chromosomes derived from peripheral blood lymphocytes, bone marrow cells.
The laboratory offers high resolution G band chromosome analyses and a comprehensive molecular cytogenetics service involving fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for research purpose.
FISH is a cytogenetic technique that can be used to detect and localize the presence or absence of specific DNA sequences on chromosomes. It uses fluorescent probes that bind to only those parts of the chromosome with which they show a high degree of sequence similarity. Fluorescence microscopy can be used to find out where the fluorescent probe bound to the chromosome. FISH is often used for finding specific features in DNA. These features can be used in genetic counseling, medicine, and species identification.

Cell culture division

The main aim of establishing this unit is to work in the field of stem cell biology. We go on our researches in embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells and are going to use these data in the clinic for hematology and oncology diseases and BMT in the future.

Hematology devision

The Hematology unit was established in our centre to evaluate peripheral blood and bone marrow cell population with greater precision and more accurate detection of distributional and morphologic abnormalities. Our centre use H1 from Technicon and KX21 from sysmex compony for our research porpose.

Biochemistry division:
In order to evaluate biochemical parameter in the sample, this unit was established with Alsyon 300 from Abott compony.
Automated laboratory analyzers are capable of performing its function with greater precision and more accurate detection.

ELISA division:
Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay, or ELISA, is a biochemical technique used mainly in immunology to detect the presence of an antibody or an antigen in a sample. The ELISA unit was established to provide this purpose in our research.
The ELISA has been used as a diagnostic tool in medicine and plant pathology, as well as a quality control check in various industries. In simple terms, in ELISA an unknown amount of antigen is affixed to a surface, and then a specific antibody is washed over the surface so that it can bind to the antigen. This antibody is linked to an enzyme, and in the final step a substance is added that the enzyme can convert to some detectable signal. Thus in the case of fluorescence ELISA, when light is shone upon the sample, any antigen/antibody complexes will fluoresce so that the amount of antigen in the sample can be measured.

Cytochemistry division:
The cytochemistry unite was established in Hematology & Oncology research centre in order to evaluate the cell lineage and differentiation process.
Our laboratory are done some specific staining on bone marrow and peripheral blood smear to asses the lineage and the stage of differentiation in leukemic cell population. These specific staining includes:
Iron stain, Sudan Black B stain, Periodic Acid Shift or PAS stain, TRAP stain, Wright & Giemsa and Retic stain.

Microbiology division:
This unit was established for culturing of bacteria in order to make up gene manipulation and gene coloning division in the future.
